About Lions District 3234D2

Lion Robert Williams, an American Army officer, visited India in 1955. He was a Scout & came in contact with Scouts of Bombay towards the end of Second World War. There he met a Scout Troop run by late. Noshir K. J. Khan & Scout Commissioner kaiki B. Godrej. During these Scouting & Camping Missions, a close bond & Friendship was developed between this Trio. In 1955, a Scout Jamboree was held in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Robert Williams agreed to host for Two Scouts from India as his Guests. Late. Noshir K. J. Khan suggested Comdr. Kaiki B. Godrej & Noshir Pundole to attend this Scout Jamboree. After the Jamboree, Lion Robert invited the Two to attend Local Lions Club Meeting at Saxtan. This Event was entertaining & exciting for both Comdr. Godrej & Nashir Pundole. While thanking Lion Robert Williams Noshir Pundole said, “It would be a Great Day for India, when Lions Movement is ushared in our Country”.

Noshir Khan was keen to start Lions`s Work in India & had a lot of correspondence with Robert Williams who later turned this correspondence to Lions International. Lions International deputed Lion Shafeec A. Mansour to study & start Lions Activity in India. Together they gathered 20 Like minded Members in Bombay & started First Lions Club in India on February 3rd ,1956. Lion Noshir Pundole became its First President. Comdr. Godrej also gathered 20 Prospective Members in Delhi & Second Lions Club was formed on February 4th, 1956. Lions Club of Saxton took honours to sponcer both these Clubs. Lions banners were presented at the time of Charter to these Clubs, Feb 11th , 1956 to Delhi Lions Club & Feb 14th , 1956 to Bombay Lions Club.

Lion Noshir Khan, Sohrab K. Khan, Minoo J. D. Engineer, Jamshed Agha & Noshir Pundale formed Nucleus in West & Lion Kaiki B. Godrej, Lion Devi Dutt & M. K. Menon worked tirelessly in the North for Lions Movement.

District 304 was formed for all of India, Burma & Ceylon with great Lion Luminaries.

Ln Nashir N. Pundole         First District Governor (1956 to 1959)
Ln Nashir Khan                   First District Cabinet Secretary
Ln Kaiki B. Godrej               Second District Cabinet Secretary
Ln Minoo J D Engineer      District PRO
Ln Jahangir Surti                District Treasurer

During this period, all of them met each morning at Bombelli`s Café & planned the Growth of Lionism in India. By 1959, 45 Clubs & 2000 devoted Lions were active in Lions Service Organization in India. Thus, Lion Pundole, Late lion Noshir Khan & Minoo J. D. Engineer laid solid Foundations for Lionism to flourish in India.

Lion Rohit C. Mehta was appointed Second District Governor for Two Years 1959-60 & 1960-61 for Dist. 304. That year, First Publication of “The Indian Lion” was released. The First Publication won the International Award called “LEO AWARD” for best Publication from among all entries around the World.

During all this time, Ln Jahangir D. Surti, was a Cabinet Treasurer. Ln Noshir Pundole became the Asian Secretary working First from Flora Fountain then India House in Bombay. Lion Minoo J. D. Engineer after Retirement was requested by Lions International to be Part Time Representative of the Association. Lion Rusi B. Gimi joined him to further the cause of Lionism in Eastern India. Later Lion Noshir Pundole resigned as Asian Secretary to become International Director & Lion Minoo J. D. Engineer was requested by Lions International to be the Asian Secretary. Sometime later Ln Rusi B. Gini retired.

Lion M. J. D. Engineer expanded scope of Secretariat & for the first time, items bearing the Lions Emblem were locally manufactured & made available to Lions Members in India. Later, New Members Kits & other Administrative material were made in India & Ln M. J. D. Engineer made the Secretariat as a Distribution Centre for nearly half the World. His tireless efforts were highly appreciated by Lions International & was decorated with 16 International Presidents Award & 12 International Presidents Gold Extension Awards. In 1972, the Association presented the coveted “Ambassador of Goodwill” Award, Highest honour to a lion Member. He was the First Indian to receive this honour. He also became, First Lion from India to be a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Lion Rohit C. Mehta became Second International Director from India for Two Years 1970-1972. He was a Third Lion to receive “Ambassador of Goodwill” Award, Second was Lion Sohrab K. Khan to receive this honour in 1973 Convention at Miami, USA.

Around 1961, District 304 was divided into 4 Sub Districts with their Own District Governors & their Cabinets. In 1963, Fifth ‘Central’ District was formed but was dropped in 1966. Multiple Dist. 304 was again subdivided from 5 Sub Districts to 11 Sub Districts, each with their District Governor & full Cabinets. Thus, from One District 304 in 1956, India had 11 Fully Operational Independent Districts in 1967! One District Every year !!

Groomed by Late Lion MSD Engineer, his son Lion Vispy Engineer took over as South Asian Secretary in 20th Year of Lionism in India. In 1968, He was appointed as International Representative . Till 1975, he did a Great Work for extension of Lions Clubs International in India, Srilanka & East Africa. He is also a recipient of Highest Award in Lionism, “Ambassador of Goodwill”.

What started as 2 Clubs & 50 Members in 1956, we were 68th Country to adopt Lionism & are today the 3rd Most Important Country after USA & Japan doing variety of Service activities for our Communities. Today, in 2011, we have a strong presence in the International Lion Community having 66 Districts, 5820 Lions Clubs with more than 2,00,000 devoted Lions doing great Humanitarian Services, Giving away their time, talent & treasure & living up to the Lions Slogan “We Serve”. Mehta (1992-93) & MJF Lion Ashok Mehta (2005-06) We have come a Long Way. 65 Years of Vibrant Lionism, we are growing from Strength to Strength!!
